Microblading Career possibilities are great, but is this career right for you?

One of the main concerns most students have prior to training is  “Will I be any good at microblading?”   The answer is Yes, with proper training & practice.  We often say practice makes perfect PERMANENT!   The main difference between good & bad microblading artists is their commitment to themselves and the quality of their education.  Attending credible microblading fundamental training will provide a new microblader with the educational tools & support needed to develop and improve their techniques.   You don’t have to be artistic but it certainly helps.

The most important requirements  for a microblading artist are:

  • Having good eyesight

  • Hand-eye coordination

  • People skills

To give you an idea of the hand-eye coordination needed try out a free sample lesson taken from 3D Brows  Online Training.   To access the lesson click the link 3D Brows Tips & Tricks/Practice drawing hair-strokes on paper.

Have fun with this lesson and remember becoming a microblading artist is just like any other skilled profession, to be successful takes, commitment, a good educational foundation, and a good mentor you can rely on.

The microblading process applies pigments into sparse areas of the brow via the microblading hand tool to create additional hair-like strokes where needed. This process adds beauty and dimension to the shape of the brow, and highlights one of the beautiful components on the face: the eyes!

Microblading can also be referred to as:

  • 3D Brows
  • 6D Brows
  • Hair Strokes
  • Brow Strokes
  • Nano Strokes
  • Feather Brow
  • 6D Eyebrows
  • Semi permanent makeup
  • Hand tool method

In most states you do not need prior experience, training or a certification to start microblading.  Like any business, you will need to set up a business license or you can be employed under someone else’s licenses.

Microblading is a form of tattooing, and in most areas it falls under the same guidelines as tattooing. Tattooing regulations and recommended practices vary from state to state in the United States. It is also subject to body art and cosmetic tattoo/permanent makeup regulations in some areas.

The main licensing requirements for Microblading in most states require you to:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a current blood-borne pathogens certificate, this can be taken online for $25.
  • Facility approved by OSHA/local health inspector

Within the industry most new students who attend 2-day microblading trainings don’t get the full experience needed to feel comfortable working on their own clients.  To ensure new students get the educational experience needed, industry organizations such as AAM & SPCP require new Permanent Makeup/ Microblading Artist to obtain at least 100-hours of education.   These hours can be a combination of pre-online training & hands-on training.

At 3D Brows Academy with over 500 graduates of our Microblading Fundamentals +100-hr training, we have found over 95% of our graduates are able to start working on their own clients after completing the 5-day hands-on training.

Yes.   With our entry level Microblading Course we offer two packages and they both include the following kits:

  • Proof of blood-borne pathogens certificate. This course can be taken online for $25 and takes about two hours to complete.
  • Return and comply with 3D Brows Training Agreement.
  • Copy of a current Photo ID (Driver’s license, Passport, etc)
  • Must be 18 years of age prior to 1st day of attendance.

The most common permanent makeup procedures are listed below in order of popularity amongst clients:

  • Eyebrows
  • Lips
  • Eyeliner
  • Areola

Industry data shows that 80% of the revenue in the permanent makeup industry comes from eyebrow procedures.  Since eyebrow microblading & shading account for 80% of the work, we recommend new artist first master eyebrow procedures before moving onto Lips or Eyeliner.   Not to mention Microblading eyebrows is not only the most popular PMU procedure but its also the easiest to learn.    Although there are some courses that include Eyebrows, Lips and Eyeliner all in one training, most industry experts don’t recommend this approach.   Permanent makeup is an ART and it takes time and practice with each discipline.  If you want to be a credible permanent makeup artist its best to learn each procedure area one step at a time!

The Microblading/ Permanent Makeup Industry within the United States is relatively young.   So young in fact the U.S. Department of Education does not provide federal education requirements for accreditation for tattooing, body art or permanent makeup.     Training & education requirements for permanent makeup are regulated by each individual state.

We understand emergencies happen. In the case that you cant make it to your scheduled training, we will honor your deposit towards the next available course date if you provide us with a 3-week-advance written notice or proof of medical emergency.

Be aware of scam trainings!  Can the training provide consumer protection or guaranteed the education provided?  The Post-Secondary School Act is required for trade schools and colleges to meet quality educational standards to protect students.   3D Brows Academy is a registered post-secondary school in the state of Utah, Consumer Protection Registration #9793244-9983 with state licensed instructors and meets all requirements by OSHA, Utah Health Department.

Make sure you’re not sharing a model with other students!!! Each student should have their own models to work on, start to finish. Ask if you’re able to work on a touch-up model. Touch-ups are one of the most important parts of microblading.

During our microblading fundamentals course students work on at least 2 of their own start to finish models and often assist working with another student on a 3rd live model.

Microblading Career Checklist will help you Choosing the right trainer?

This is a big investment in your future and there are a lot of competing options.    When seeking a training provider make sure to consider your own learning abilities and understand the type of training you get into.

Do you have the ability to self-teach? If so taking online training may be an option for you or if you have some prior experience with tattooing or skin care.  If you like learning by READING, LISTENING, or VISUALLY is a great way to gain an understanding of the microblading principles, however, for most newbies, you will need hands-on experience before working on clients.   Before you sign up for online training only keep in mind there’s a big difference between learning microblading online vs. hands-on learning.   Simply put Online learning is THEORY based whereas hands-on learning is EXPERIENCE based.

What’s your educational goal?  If your seeking an educational foundation to build upon you have come to the right place.   Trying to learn a bunch of different techniques such as lips, eyeliner and microblading at once will only give you a shallow understanding.  Improper techniques and a poor understanding are bad habits to break in this industry so you have to take it one step at a time, then once you have mastered one technique move on to the next.      Expecting to master microblading after a weekend course where the instructor spends 2-days covering fundamental topics and on the 3rd day students practice on a live model before sending them off on their own typically doesn’t allow new students to fully comprehend the fundamental requirements.

The industry standard for credible beginner microblading training is 100 hours, often times this includes a mixture of online & hands-on training experience.   100-hrs can also help with licensing requirements and better professional insurance coverage rates.

Things to look out for! Microblading is still new to most of the USA, as a fast-growing industry it can feel like the wild west at times.  Within the permanent makeup industry, the licensing regulations & requirements vary from state to state.  Just like in the tattoo industry a national sanctioned oversight society or group does not exist.  This can be good and bad, especially since when done correctly microblading is less invasive than tattooing.  Although we can appreciate some groups in the industry who are trying to establish standards at the end of the day these societies are private paid membership associations and hold no accountability for the quality of education provided.

Beware of common misleading advisement and or self-awarded claims by training.   If something sounds too good to be true seek the facts and if a trainer claims award-winning or words greatest microblading training don’t be afraid to ask them for proof.
