Starting Microblading Career Advice
Is Microblading over saturated?
Microblading Career FAQ’s part 1
What is microblading?
The microblading process applies pigments into sparse areas of the brow via the microblade to create additional hair-like strokes where needed. This process adds beauty and dimension to the shape of the brow, and highlights one of the beautiful components on the face: the eyes!
Microblading can also be referred to as:
- 3D Brows
- Hair Strokes
- Brow Strokes
- Feather Brow
- 6D Eyebrows
- Semi permanent makeup
- Hand tool method
Do I need training to start microblading?
In most states you do not need training or a certification to start microblading. Like any business, you will need to set up a business license.
Microblading is a form of tattooing, and in most areas it falls under the same guidelines as tattooing. Tattooing regulations and recommended practices vary from state to state in the United States. It is also subject to body art and cosmetic tattoo/permanent makeup regulations in some areas.
Review your state’s requirements by clicking here: TATTOOING AND BODY PIERCING | STATE LAWS, STATUTES AND REGULATIONS
If you’re unable to find your licensing requirements let us know and we can help you out!
It’s the responsibility of the student to understand the licensing requirements in their individual areas. Please note legislation and government policies are subject to change. 3D BROWS does not guarantee or assume liability for the accuracy of this information.
How can I start a career in microblading?
As you’re looking into a microblading career, most importantly take the time and do your research about your training options and state regulations. We get a lot of students who trained elsewhere and end up coming to our courses because they originally didn’t get the training they were expecting.
Here are a few things you should know before deciding on a training provider:
Who’s really going to be training you?
Some training courses will highlight their celebrity instructor but when you get to the training you get training by one of their assistants or some franchisee. Make sure your getting the training from the person you want. Remember your trainer should be a mentor and advisor to you, make sure you like them and their work. Look into their experience and make sure they have a good track record. Do they consistently show great client/student results or are they only able to show a couple good results per year.
At 3D BROWS ACADEMY we do not franchise out or allow substitute teachers. Head Instructor/Founder Patty Willardsen attends and oversees all trainings with students.
Does your training provided ongoing support?
Ask your training about their follow-up policy after you get training! Beware, in some cases trainers travel and teach, and it can be difficult to get in contact with them. Some do not even provide continued support.
At 3D BROWS we feel all trainers should be willing to be your mentor and help you to succeed. Most of our students are referrals from past students, and we often hear that our students say 3D BROWS holds nothing back with trainings. We’re here to provide our students with the tools and support to become successful, and the support shouldn’t stop after you complete a course.
We understand once a student/artist gets some experience working on clients its most likely they are going to come across a situation or need advice. For this reason we provide our students with ongoing support via phone, email, FaceTime, online, and in person. To get an indication of this, see how responsive other training providers are to questions you might have prior to your training.
What type of hands-on experience will you receive?
Will you have quality one-on-one time with an instructor?
What is the ratio of students to instructors in the class?
How many live models will you be working on, and will you be working on them from start to finish?
It’s troubling to hear from many microbladers that trained elsewhere with one instructor to eight or more students that they only got to practice a few strokes on a shared model with other students. You will need quality time with an instructor and hands-on experience with your models. You should leave a training with the confidence to start working on your own clients right away. The only way to get this confidence is with hands-on experience. Make sure you’re able to work on a couple models start to finish and that the instructors will be available for you.
At 3D BROWS ACADEMY, during our 5-day hands-on training, students work on 2 of their own models start to finish, and assist working on a 3rd model. There will be live demonstrations as well.
To prepare students to work on live models, we take them through our 5-step program to creating brow strokes: practicing strokes on paper, latex, molds, mannequin heads, and pig ears.
Why can’t I just learn to microblade online?
No online training program can give you the hands-on experience you’ll need to offer quality work to your clients. Online training alone is not enough, and should only be used as a companion to your training experience.
We often have people wanting to sign up for online training alone, thinking that they can just learn when they start working on clients. At 3D BROWS we do not support this approach. You cannot cut corners. We expect all of our students to become reputable artists.
It’s common to see other trainings in the industry mislead students, advertising that an online course or video will prepare them to start microblading on clients. We highly recommend all microbladers attend a minimum of 50 hours hands-on training with an experienced instructor prior to working on their own clients.
3D BROWS online training is a great educational program for people interested in becoming microblade artists or for seasoned microbladers needing continued educational support.
Can I learn microblading from a 2- to 3-day course?
We have found that students typically need additional training after taking a 2– to 3-day introductory course. Microblading is not as simple as it appears, and for a student to gain the proper training experience we feel they should spend an adequate amount of time going through all the fundamentals.
For microbladers who have attended other training and are needing additional training, 3D BROWS offers a Microblading Refresher Course and one-on-one hands-on training with Patty.
Do you provide a microblading starter kit?
Yes, our 5-day hands-on training does provide a microblading starter kit that will service up to 50 clients, depending on how conservative you are with pigments and supplies. All items included are the same high-quality products Patty uses, and the kit is pictured below.
In microblading its very common for trainers to provide new students with a starter kit. Keep in mind, when it comes to choosing a training provider, the decision shouldn’t come down to what’s included in your “free” microblading kit.
Why 3D BROWS ACADEMY?
We understand that it can be confusing, stressful and often misleading trying to find an education program that fits your needs!
Here are some quick facts about 3D BROWS ACADEMY:
Although we are recognized as one of the top training providers in permanent makeup for eyebrows, we feel there is an advantage to remaining a small, family-owned academy. We keep our class sizes small, and we don’t outsource trainings to other instructors on the road. This allows 3D BROWS Founder/Head Instructor Patty Willardsen quality one-on-one time with each student so that she can adapt to each student’s needs. Because of this and our ongoing training support we’re able to build a bond with each student, allowing them to truly become part of the 3D BROWS family.
Students often say they attended 3D BROWS ACADEMY because they wanted to be able to provide more than one type of brow for their clients. As a daughter to world-renowned Walt Disney Artist David Willardson, Patty has created training programs combining her art background with her years of experience in skin cosmetics and pigmentation.
If you plan on becoming a “great” at anything, you’re most likely going to need a good mentor. This especially applies to becoming a permanent makeup artist. Most of our students are referrals from past students. It’s often said that we hold nothing back from our students during our trainings. Students come from all over the world to 3D BROWS ACADEMY because of our open-door policy. After you have been trained and you get some experience working on clients, it’s likely you’re going to come across a situation or need advice. For this reason we provide our students with ongoing support through our online student forum community, by phone, email, FaceTime, and in person.
What are the course requirements?
Prior to attending any courses at 3D BROWS ACADEMY, all students are required to submit the following items:

- Copy of a current Photo ID (Driver’s license, Passport, etc)
- Pay off the remaining balance of course total.

Do I need to pay a deposit to sign up?
To secure a spot for an upcoming permanent cosmetics course we require a $500 deposit.
To get started with the online training we require online training payment in full ($950). This will also cover your course deposit.
There is a three-business-day cooling-off period commencing on the day an enrollment agreement is signed or an initial deposit or payment toward tuition and fees is made. The contract may be rescinded and all monies paid refunded if the applicant cancels before midnight on the third business day. In case of an emergency, students may change their training to a later date if the student provides a minimum of four weeks advance written notice to the training provider.
What if I’ve already taken another microblading course?
We have had several students who have received training elsewhere and feel they still need a better understanding. Depending on their experience, we offer a Microblading Refresher Course or our 5-day hands-on training.
If you feel like you really didn’t learn anything at your non-3D Brows training and you’re not comfortable taking on clients yet, we recommend our 5-day hands-on course. Even if you’ve already learned the microblading fundamentals, it’s a good idea to learn various strokes and techniques from other trainers so you can refine and master your own technique.

Can my training be applied to another school?
3D BROWS ACADEMY is an independent training facility and has no continuing education programs with other institutions, agencies, or government bodies. It is the student’s responsibility to determine whether credits, degrees or certificates will transfer to other institutions or meet an employer’s training requirements. This may be done by calling the prospective school or employer. The institution is not accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education.

- Registration under the Utah Postsecondary Proprietary School Act does not mean that the State of Utah supervises, recommends, nor accredits the institution. It is the student’s responsibility to determine whether credits, degrees, or certificates from the institution will transfer to other institutions or meet employers’ training requirements. This may be done by calling the prospective school or employer.

- Students must obtain blood-borne pathogens certificate prior to working on models.
Does 3D BROWS offer trainings outside of Utah?
Aside from private group trainings available upon request, we do not provide training on the road outside of 3D BROWS ACADEMY. Research shows that a proper learning environment can increase academic progress by as much as 25%. This is one of the many reasons we do not offer trainings outside of our training facility here in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Having a training facility with the proper equipment and atmosphere ensures that we’re able to give our students the best possible learning experience. Offering training on the road using conference rooms or hotels is not OSHA compliant, and these rented spaces do not have the facility accommodations needed.
Over 90% of our students travel from outside of Utah. Our location is centrally located within North America, making it easy for traveling students. To help make our students stay both affordable and accommodating, we have partnered with a local Marriott hotel to offer discounted room rates and complimentary transportation services to our academy. For information about our student lodging discounts with Marriott Hotel, click here.
Where should I stay if I’m from out of town?
We have negotiated a special room rate and transportation with the local Marriott, including breakfast and daily transportation (no need to rent a car). For more information visit our Travel Deals page.
